At its narrowest, near the Stepstones, the Narrow Sea is only a short sail wide, which is why Dorne and the Stormlands have always traded and fought with Tyrosh, Lys and Myr. Farther north the sea widens: Braavos lies north-east of the Vale across open water, and Pentos sits opposite the Crownlands, a few days' sail from Dragonstone.
Essos itself continues far to the east through Volantis and the Rhoyne, the Dothraki Sea, Slaver's Bay and Qarth to Asshai by the Shadow. Our map focuses on Westeros, so only the western coast of Essos is shown; the Free Cities are marked in the positions they hold on the official maps.
The Free Cities on the map
- Braavos — Northernmost and wealthiest of the Free Cities, built on lagoon islands across the narrow sea.
- Pentos — Free City on the narrow sea opposite Westeros, ruled by wealthy merchant magisters.
- Myr — Free City on the narrow sea known for lenses, lace and its skilled crossbowmen.
- Tyrosh — Free City on an island at the top of the Stepstones, known for dyes and sellswords.
- Lys — Free City on a warm island south of the Stepstones, famous for pleasure houses and poisons.
- Volantis — Oldest and southernmost Free City, built at the mouth of the Rhoyne on the Summer Sea.
- Andalos — Ancient homeland of the Andals in western Essos, rolling country north of Pentos.
