Set roughly at the middle of the Wall where the kingsroad ends, Castle Black has no outer walls of its own; the ice at its back is defence enough. A winch cage lifts men to the top, and a tunnel beneath leads north.
The Lord Commander of the Night's Watch rules here, with the armoury, Lord Commander's Tower and the common hall gathered along the base of the ice. Recruits are trained in the yard before taking their vows, and rangings north depart through its gate.
