Sitting on an island beneath the smoking mountain of Dragonmont, this castle was raised by Valyrian stonemasons using arts long lost, its towers shaped like dragons and its gargoyles worked into the walls. Blackwater Bay lies to the west and the narrow sea to the east.
The Targaryens ruled from here for a century before the Conquest and kept it afterwards as the traditional seat of the heir to the Iron Throne. Fishing villages and a small port lie below the castle.
