The Crownlands are the youngest region of Westeros. Carved out of the Riverlands and the Stormlands by Aegon the Conqueror, they are held directly by whoever sits the Iron Throne and are governed from King's Landing, the capital and largest city of the Seven Kingdoms.

The region wraps around Blackwater Bay: the mainland shore from Crackclaw Point down to Massey's Hook, and the islands of Dragonstone, Driftmark and Claw Isle at the bay's mouth. Dragonstone, the ancestral seat of House Targaryen, is where the Conquest began.

Explore: The Crownlands

King's Landing sits on the north bank of the Blackwater Rush where it meets the bay, on three hills crowned by the Red Keep, the Great Sept of Baelor and the Dragonpit. North along the coast lie Rosby, Stokeworth and the port of Duskendale; north again is Crackclaw Point, a wild peninsula of stubborn petty lords.

South of the river the Kingswood spreads toward the Stormlands, and the Wendwater drains it into the bay. The Kingsroad runs north from the capital to the Trident and south to Storm's End; the Goldroad leaves by the Lion Gate and the Roseroad by the King's Gate.

The Crownlands are wealthy, crowded and cosmopolitan. King's Landing alone holds around half a million people, from the Flea Bottom slums to the Street of Steel. Duskendale was once the richest port on the coast until its lord defied a king. The Velaryons of Driftmark and the Celtigars of Claw Isle are old Valyrian families who came with the Targaryens.
