Rising above the Sunset Sea on the western coast, the Rock is a colossal outcrop three times the height of the Wall, hollowed into halls, mines and stairs that descend far below sea level. A lion's mouth gate opens on the western face.
House Lannister has held it since Lann the Clever supposedly tricked the Casterlys out of it in the Age of Heroes. Gold veins beneath the stone underwrite the family's wealth, and Lord Tywin Lannister rules the westerlands from its heights.
