Where the high road climbs out of the riverlands into the Vale, two watchtowers joined by a stone wall and an iron gate block a narrow defile. The Knight of the Gate commands it, a post of honour among Vale knights.
A dozen armies have broken against this choke point over the centuries, giving it its name. Travellers are challenged here with the traditional demand to state who would pass the Bloody Gate, and no one enters the Vale by road without answering.
